All the like minded and sports loving citizens of Thane City have participated in conducting the annual "Thane Marathon" under the auspices of Thane District Amateur Athletic Association which started in the year 1989. The event was initiated on a low key note with a very small budget and over a distance of 21 Kms. Naturally, this event was named as Thane Varsha Mini Marathon. However, the event attracted 7000 athletes from Thane District.

        Year after year, there has been an increase, not only in the valuable experience but also a great deal of participation of athletes and involvement of public and social organisations. This heartening support inspired the organisers in forming of Thane Marathon Trust which is affiliated to Thane District Amateur Athletic Association. Under the leadership of Mr. Satish Pradhan, former M.P. ( Rajya Sabha ), the Marathon Race expanded its wings gradually and widened its orbits from District to National Level.

       Every year, the response from the participants has been in ascending order and has surpassed the magic figure of 50,000 some years back. Among this mammoth numbers of participants, Elite International Marathon & cross country runners from Services Sports control board; Railways; Police etc. along with our other National Level reputed athletes were seen in action, brushing their shoulders and burning their feet for winning the handsome cash award of Rs. 1,00,000 /-. In the event of a winner, winning the race with setting a new National or Asian Record, a additional handsome special prize will be awarded. Along with these professionally trained masters, our health conscious joggers and amateur runners of our state, who are seen jogging or running along the lake side or in jogging parks everyday, will also be participating in this prestigious event.
